Which places you have visited in the area, you would recommend to others?

Portpatrick – Car park and disabled toilet at end of harbour, beautiful views out to sea when the sea mist cleared. Nice places to eat on the seafront. No trouble getting around with the wheelchair.

Port Logan Botanic Gardens – Walled garden totally wheelchair accessible with good paths. We only did a small part of the rest of the grounds but it was all on grass, we were lucky enough to have lovely weather so the ground was dry and firm, could be boggy after rain. Disabled toilet, accessible tea room. We really enjoyed the walled garden and it is worth paying an extra £1 for the audio tour as it gives a lot of info about plants etc.

Mull of Galloway – There is a main car park but also limited parking for disabled at the visitor centre, go through the gates at main car park and follow the narrow road around past the lighthouse to visitor centre. Apart from visitor centre and coffee shop, there are no paths suitable for a wheelchair, but views are lovely on a clear day.

Cream O’Galloway Visitor Cente – There is a creamery tour but we were told by a member of staff that you need to get out of your chair, climb some stairs and then get into another chair at the top, the farm tour can possibly be done if your wheelchair has large wheels but is still quite hard going, and we were advised that it would be unsuitable due to the type of wheels on Meg’s wheelchair.  Ice cream parlour accessible and thoroughly enjoyed a large ice cream sundae.

Galloway Hydros Visitor Centre – Wheelchair accessible, parking right outside the entrance. Guided tour of the power station and then a short drive in your own car to the Tongland Dam, reservoir and fish ladder. When busy tours are done in groups but we were the only people there when we went so had our own tour. All staff were friendly and helpful, short film about history of the power stations, visit to switch room and generator room. Followed guide up to Tongland dam where we were walked along the top of the dam (including wheelchair). You can walk down the fish ladder but it is not suitable for wheelchair or limited mobility, there are benches on the dam for people to wait for the rest of the group.  First Monday of each month dam gates are opened for testing so if possible this is a good time to visit.  Returned to power station where there is an exhibition, children can print certificates to show they have visited and there is a small shop and tearoom. Well worth a visit.

Castle Kennedy Gardens – Car park is loose gravel and a bit difficult for wheelchair but disabled parking is close to entrance so manageable. Gardens are beautiful, walled garden has hard paths, rest of grounds are over grass and there are a lot of steep ups and downs so you need someone strong and fit to push wheelchair but well worth trying as the whole place was really lovely. It is worth paying £2 for the guide as it gives you some information about the grounds and also shows various walks around the gardens. Once again the weather was glorious so the ground was firm, and we spent about 4 hours exploring. I imagine it wouldn’t be suitable for wheelchairs after a lot of rain as the ground may get quite boggy.

Port Logan Beach – Brilliant beach good car park close by but can drive car onto sand which is ideal if you have a wheelchair.  Local pub good for food.

Creetown Gem Rock Museum – Totally wheelchair accessible, all indoors, ideal for wet day. Large collection of gems, crystals, rocks and fossils from around the world. 10 minute film about the history of the collection. Crystal cave, Lapidary workshop, good café with meals and snacks and shop. Lots of interesting information and items to see.
